Presentation

Discover an impressive collection of figurative paintings, from th post-impressionist era to modern days, which includes some of the master pieces of the greatest modern painters such as: Renoir, Matisse, Signac, Bonnard, Marquet, Valadon, Van Dongen...

The first modern art museum outside of Paris.
The painter Albert-André (1869-1954) was the curator of the encyclopedic museum of Bagnols-sur-Cèze in 1917, when he decided to turn it into the first "province" modern art museum, and was soon imitated by Grenoble and Saint-Tropez.
The museum was qualified as a "friendship museum", and the collection grew thanks to donations from the curators painter friends. The masters Renoir and Monet gave him a welcome support, as well as painters from his own generation such as Georges D'Espagnat, Louis Valtat, Jean Puy...

"La jeune peinture" des années 1950 (The "young painting" from the 1950's)
In the 1950's, the "Young painting" movement advocates fors a return of figurative painting. The museum is particularly rich in paintings from this new figurative wave: Bardone, Génis, Guiramand combine tradition and modernity in a celebration  of colour, soon followed by Lesieur, Collomb, Lorjou, Minaux, Brasilier, Petit, Parsus, Rodde and more recently byr Cayol, Cottavoz, Maly, Steiner...

The George Besson collection
All these artists have one thing in common: they were all close aquaintances of the art critic George Besson, whop was their passionate champion, particularly in "Les Lettres françaises".
At the end of his life, with hios wife's approval, George Besson donated his collection to the State, with part of it going to Bagnols-sur-Cèze. The museum of friendship is thus proud to be able to display a few of the emblematic master pieces of 20th Century art, such as "Le 14 juillet au Havre" by  Marquet, "La fenêtre ouverte à Nice" by Matisse, "le Bouquet de fleurs des champs" by Bonnard or the "Portrait d'Adèle Besson" by Van Dongen.
