Château du Cheylard d'Aujac
Presentation
A symbol of the combined power of the bishop of Uzès and of a family from Anduze, the Cheylard d'Aujac was built during the 12th Century, in the higher part of the Cèze Valley, on an overhang near the Mount Lozère.
Perched at a 600 m altitude at the crossroads between the present day "départements" of the Gard, the Lozère and the Ardèche, on an exceptional site surrounded by nature and wildlife, it keeps watch on the area. From the top of its spur, it is the last of a network of castles that used to line a route that dates back to the Middle Ages and is mentioned as early as 1270 under the name of "Val Cezarencha".
From the square tower to the round tower, the castle illustrates the evolutions in castle building from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. A medieval village was built inside its walls, including a farm, a dovecote, a sheeppen, a chestnut dryer and a chapel. The hamlet of the Cheylard has now been renovated and contributes to the life and upkeep of the castle, just as it always has.
Several craftsmen have their workshop in the hamlet and many events are held there all through the summer. There is also a cinema room, a medieval shop, a museum, stalls and a place to eat.
The visit of the outside is not guided but the visit of the inside is.
