Castle of Cheylard d'Aujac
Presentation
Symbol of the double power of the bishop of Uzès and the family of Anduze, Cheylard d'Aujac was established in the 12th century in the center of the high valley of the Cèze in the Cevennes, on a spur near the Mont Lozère.
Perched at an altitude of 600 m, at the crossroads of the current departments of Gard, Lozère and Ardèche, from the top of its promontory, it is the last intact representative of a network of fortifications on an itinerary already existing in the Middle Ages, mentioned as early as 1270 as Val Cezarencha.
From the square tower to the round tower, the castle illustrates the evolution of castles from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Under the protection of its ramparts, a fortified medieval village was established with a farm, a dovecote, a sheepfold and a chapel. Now renovated, this hamlet of Le Cheylard serves as it did in the past for the life of the castle. Residence of craftsmen, it is the framework of occasional animations, projections, exhibitions, store
